A morning series to awaken the body, mind and spirit through the traditions of Jewish prayer and Hatha Yoga. Each session will integrate yoga asana practice, self-directed meditation, and a brief teaching on one element of the shacharit (morning) prayer service.

------------------

Session I: Modeh Ani — cultivating heart openness and gratitude through the physical practice and the text of Modeh Ani ("I am grateful"), the traditional prayer said upon waking

Session II: Matir Asurim — The blessing matir asurim ("who frees the captives") blessing, one of the 15 'blessings of the dawn,' thanks God for releasing those in captivity. Using this prayer as our textual grounding, we will use twists and gentle binds to find freedom in joints and muscles

Session III: Shema
—The Shema ("listen") prayer focuses us on our sense of hearing, and the power of listening. We'll listen to our bodies, breath and environment to guide our physical and mindfulness practice.

About the instructor:
Shuli Passow has been practicing yoga since the age of 7--the same year she received her first siddur (prayer book). Since then, she has continually sought ways to bring her yoga practice into relationship with her Jewish spiritual practices. Shuli completed her yoga teacher training at the Asheville Yoga Center, in Asheville, North Carolina, and has been teaching yoga to the students of Yeshivat Hadar, in Manhattan. Off the mat, Shuli is the Director of Community Initiatives at the Jewish Funds for Justice, supporting Jews and Jewish institutions around the country to work for social change.
